Echoes in the Ice is a unique exhibition of collages of explorers to the Earths Polar regions. The collages dynamically illustrate the history, heroism, endurance and individuality of explorers from many countries, in humanity’s quest to discover the secrets of the Earth’s extreme Polar Regions. The history of their exploits is the history of the Arctic and the Antarctic, two areas of vital importance in our lives.
For the first time visual artist and documentary film director Rik van Glintenkamp has used the art of the collage to trace historic Polar events. The exploration of the Arctic and the Antarctic, their ecologies and histories, are melded with portraits, profiles, and personal effects of the heroic and sometimes bizarre minded explorers. These divergent elements are presented in visually dynamic ways.
The portraits are combined with reproductions of historic diaries, letters, maps, charts, drawings and photographs to create a multi-faceted impression of each explorer. They take the viewer on an exciting visual journey through five hundred years of Polar history.
